Sometimes adding saturation gives you the color you want, but changes the way a drum hits or brings too much of one frequency into the distortion. Distinct Pro gives you ways to shape those relationships in the same plugin, so you can work on the tone and the impact together.
Its Drive section combines three harmonic types with EQ ahead of the saturation. The DYN section lets you shape the compression response and adjust the attack after it. Use the sections together to build a more complete treatment, or switch either one out when you only want the other part of the processing.
Start with the tone you want to drive.
The low, mid and high EQ controls sit before the saturation. Boost or reduce a region there and you change what pushes into the harmonic processing, giving you a different result from simply equalizing the finished output.
You can lean the drive toward more low-frequency body, reduce how strongly the midrange pushes into it or favor a brighter starting point. That makes the EQ part of the character you build, with more to choose than turning the amount of distortion up or down.
Find the color that suits the recording.
Odd, Even and Digit give you three different harmonic starting points, including a soft-clipping option. Distort sets the main character and intensity, while SAT adds another layer of harmonic content alongside it.
A restrained setting can add a smaller change to your recording's density. A harder setting can make distortion a much more obvious part of a bass line, guitar or drum treatment. Choose the type by ear, then use the tone and dynamics controls to shape how that color fits your music.

Make the compression part of the character.
Behavior changes more than one aspect of the DYN section's response, moving from feedback toward feed-forward behavior while changing the ratio and knee. You can favor a gentler compression shape or move toward a firmer response as you bring more compression into the treatment.
That gives you a useful way to make the dynamics belong with the color. A driven drum group can need a different grip from a bass line that only needs a little more control. Distinct Pro lets you work on that relationship inside the same plugin, with attack and release speed choices to help fit the compression to your recording.
Keep the attack or soften the impact.
Transient Control works after the compression, letting you adjust how the initial hit comes through. Bring back more of the attack when a drum needs to feel more immediate, or soften it when the impact is taking too much attention away from the rest of the treatment.
You can shape that response while keeping the harmonic character you have been building. It is another reason to reach for Distinct Pro as a complete tone-and-dynamics processor, especially when added color and the feel of the attack need to work together.
Give the center and sides their own treatment.
Mid/side mode lets you work on the center and wider elements separately. The central image can need a different amount of color or control from the material spread around it, and Distinct Pro gives you that choice within its processing.
You can also work in stereo or dual-mono modes when those relationships better suit your recording. Choose the mode for the job, then make the tone and dynamics decisions by listening to the whole arrangement.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the Drive or DYN section on its own?
Yes. They have separate section on/off controls. Disable DYN when you only want the Drive processing, or disable Drive when you want to work with the dynamics section on its own.
Is the three-band EQ a multiband distortion processor?
No. The low, mid and high controls shape the signal before the saturation. They do not establish three independently processed distortion bands.
What changes when I move Behavior?
It morphs the compression response from feedback toward feed-forward operation while changing the ratio and knee. Use it to choose the feel of the compression alongside the amount and timing.
Where does Transient Control act?
It shapes the attack after the compression, letting you preserve more of the initial hit or reduce it.
Can I process the middle and sides separately?
Yes. Choose mid/side mode and adjust their processing separately. Stereo and dual-mono modes are also available.
