How Bus Compression Works and Where to Use It
Most mixes hit a point where you run out of things to check. All of the levels are balanced, the EQ is dialed in, and every part sounds right in solo. Then you play it next to a commercial record and yours still sounds like something is off. Nothing is technically wrong, the mix just doesn't have that "glue" yet.
That last step usually isn't another EQ move or a louder limiter. It's cohesion, and cohesion is the entire job description of bus compression.
How bus compression works
A bus compressor sits across a group of instruments, or the whole mix, and responds to the combined signal instead of a single sound. For instance on the drum bus, when the drums hit, it pulls everything down a touch. Every element starts reacting to every other element, the same way musicians react to each other when they play in the same room.
Dial in just 1 to 3 dB of gain reduction on your mix bus and something changes that's hard to describe but you can instantly hear. The mix starts to glue together as one. The bass locks to the kick, the vocal rides on the track instead of floating way above it, and the whole song's energy shifts and picks up momentum it didn't have before. Engineers call it glue because nothing else really describes the effect.
The VCA style bus compression is the one that made this famous. It's fast, clean, and punchy. A slow attack lets the front of every hit punch through untouched, then the compressor grabs the sustain behind it, so the mix gets tighter and more powerful at the same time instead of trading one for the other.
Where it goes
The mix bus is the classic spot. 1 to 2 dB of gain reduction at 2:1 or 4:1 ratio, with a slow attack, fast or auto release. Plenty of engineers strap it across the 2-bus early and mix into it, so every balance decision gets made against the compressed sound rather than having to readjust everything at the end.
The drum bus is another place people naturally put bus compression on as well. 2 to 4 dB of gain reduction with the same slow attack can transform the entire sound of your drum kit, with the transients hitting harder and the whole kit sounding like it has more life to it.
Instrument groups benefit the same way. A wall of layered guitars or a stack of backing vocals through one bus compressor stops sounding like six individual parts and becomes a "wall of sound".
The one thing it can't fix
Bus compression is not a repair tool. If the low end is clashing or the balance is wrong, a bus compressor listens to those problems and reproduces them rhythmically across the whole mix, which is how you get that pumping effect that nobody asked for (depending on the genre you're mixing). Get the balance of your mix close first because bus compression rewards a mix that's already 90% of the way there, which is exactly why it works so well as the finishing move.

A starting point that works
Bring it up on the 2-bus of a mix you're happy with and set the Ratio at 4:1, slowest attack, fastest release or auto. Pull the threshold down until the meter shows about 2 dB of gain reduction on the loud sections, then match the output level and bypass it back and forth. Listen to how the parts relate to each other now together rather than to any single sound.
From there, experiment with different ratios and attack and release times. There are no set rules in audio so the most important thing is to have fun with it and make good music that inspires you.
